Each year at our swimming carnival, a special shield is presented to the swimmer who displays resilience, determination and having a go. Ben was a very keen athlete especially in running and swimming. He never gave up and always had a go, giving the activity his best shot. In Prep he contracted leukaemia. He was in remission until Year 5 when the leukaemia came back. Even when he was very sick, he wanted to be involved in all aspects of school life. He went on the Year 5 camp even though it meant that a St Luke’s nurse had to check up on him twice a day. Sadly in 1999 when he was in Year 6 Ben died. His parents wanted our school community to remember Ben and his determination so that it could inspire others to do the same. This year’s winner is Bridie Davissen in 5M. Congratulations Bridie and thank you for sharing your determination with all of us.
